Alone or not?

The search?
Maybe because we are social animals by nature, we are afraid of being alone. Even though there are billions of us on this planet, not to mention all the other incredible creatures that we share this planet with, on the cosmic scale we feel quite lonely. The instinctive search to look for life elsewhere has been driving humans to develop new and more powerful telescopes some of which are mainly used to find habitable planets. Even landing on Mars multiple times and conducting experiments and sending out other probes to take a closer look at the other planets in our solar systems and even their moons. Who knows, we might find something as new and improved probes and sensors are developed.
Are we really?
I would like to clarify that I do not believe that earth is the only planet with life. Looking at the sheer number of planets that are out there and then seeing the diversity of life on our planet that is thriving in almost all kinds of environments, it will be surprising if we really are alone in the universe. We can debate about the possibility of intelligent, space exploring life forms but I don't think that there isn't any simple life form out there, in fact it might be abundant and could just be a matter of time before we find proof. I just wish I can see it in my lifetime.
Why did this question arise?
Just a few centuries ago this world looked huge to humans, the diatances seemed impossibly long. But as cities grew, civilization expanded and the means of transportation became faster, the distances shrunk and the world became smaller. We were always fascinated with the stars and the inevitable advancement in technology provided us with the tools to take a closer look at them. When new planets were discovered, the question of the possibility of life also started to rise and so did the search for it's answer.
What if there really isn't anyone out there?
This is completely hypothetical of course, so is the whole post for that matter, but what would it really mean if we truly are alone. Well it would depend on the kind of person you are. Some people might be disappointed, some might be happy and others may not even care. As for the people who just want to explore new things there are many unexplored places on earth even today. We have so much on this planet alone that one lifetime is just not enough to explore all of it. Most of the oceans are still a mystery and new species of plants and animals are still being discovered.
For an explorer the main thing should be the search for truth no matter where it may lead and thanks to the vastness of space there will always be something new to explore.
